Severe Weather Possible

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 29-04-2009

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible on both Thursday and Friday. For Thursday, a wave of energy will be passing near the tri-state, which will spark the development of showers and thunderstorms, some of which may be strong to severe with damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain being the main threats. For Friday, we will once again be under the gun for the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms. A cold front will be sliding SE towards the area. As this occurs, showers and thunderstorms (some strong to severe) will once again develop.

Active Weather Pattern!

After a day filled with occassional showers on Tuesday, Wednesday looks to hold much of the same. Expect scattered showers to hang around the tri-state through the day, before a brief lull moves in on Wednesday night. I am keeping my eyes on the threat for some strong to severe thunderstorms on Friday. The setup will be there…it’s just a matter of having the right pieces falling into place at the right time. As of now, that looks to occur. A strong cold front will be plowing towards the tri-state through the day on Friday. Out ahead of it, moisture levels (humidity and dewpoints) will be on the increase, which will prime the atmosphere for the development of strong to severe thunderstorms. I will have much more on this by Wednesday, when the forecast models will have a little better of a handle on the timing/location of the various “puzzle pieces.”

Bye-Bye 80s…

Well, after that awesome stretch of “too good to be true” weather, the rain is back! A cold front will slowly edge toward the tri-state through the day, aiding in the development of showers and thunderstorms, mainly from late-morning onwards. Expect highs to reach the lower to middle 70s.

The models are showing an increasingly wet future, with the potential for flooding across parts of the midwest by the weekend! Here is a look at the GFS’s total precip forecast from now through Saturday: http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/12/images/gfs_p60_120m.gif

Magnificent Weekend!

An amazing weekend is on tap! An area of high pressure will be situated off the east coast, which will help pump very warm air into the Ohio Valley! Expect mostly sunny skies and highs in the lower 80s for both Saturday and Sunday, with only a slight risk for a shower on Sunday! Enjoy!

One more day…

This cloudy, cool, and usettled weather is getting old, isn’t it? Well, the nicer weather is just a stone’s toss away! For Wednesday, expect a continued threat of scattered showers. Temps will top out in the midde 50s area-wide, so grab the sweatshirt before heading out! Thursday is the first day of nicer weather, with skies clearing out and temps topping out in the upper 60s! Check out my latest five-day outlook for a look at the rest of the week! :-)

Chilly and Dreary Tuesday

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 20-04-2009

Well, I wish I had better news. Tuesday looks to continue with the chilly and dreary weather, all thanks to a large area of low pressure spinning to our north. Expect mostly cloudy skies (a few peaks of sun possible) with occassional scattered showers around the area.

Ready for the warmth?

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 14-04-2009

Wednesday looks to bring much of the same in regards to the weather. Expect clouds to dominate the area through the day, but we should see a few peaks of sun every now and then. I have added a 20% chance of rain tomorrow, as some isolated areas may see a shower or two, but it will all be light. Highs should top out around 50 degrees, with some spots only making it to the upper 40s! Fear not, as much warmer air is on the way! After this pesky low pressure system scoots by, high pressure will slide in on Thursday. Said high will help clear the skies and get us on the path to much warmer temps. By Friday, we should be flirting with the 70 degree mark under mostly sunny skies!

Dreary Weather…

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 14-04-2009

After strong to severe thunderstorms rolled across parts of the tri-state yesterday, today is much calmer! The disturbance responsible for the active day yesterday is spinning right over the Ohio Valley right now (noon), and will be slowly sliding east through the rest of the day before transferring its energy to the East Coast (where a new storm will take over). N/NW winds will keep temps fairly cool over the next couple days before a S/SW wind takes over on Friday (which will be the start of a very nice warm-up)! I wouldn’t rule out a few scattered showers today through tomorrow, but they should be light. Highs for today and tomorrow look to be in the 50s, with lows tonight falling into the lower 40s (upper 30s in some spots if any clearing takes place)!

In reviewing the severe weather reports from yesterday, note that some portions of the tri-state were in on the action:

Chilly Tuesday!

After we had low temps bottoming out in the upper 20s and lower 30s across the area this morning, this afternoon won’t be much different. High temps will struggle to make it into the lower 40s before falling yet again tonight! Lows for tonight look to bottom out in the middle to upper 20s across the area! Please take all necessary precautions to protect against loss of agricultural life!

Warm…but rain is on the way!

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 01-04-2009

Wow! Was yesterday nice or what!?!?! Expect partly cloudy skies for your Thursday, with highs topping out around 70 degrees! Most of the day should be dry, with isolated showers moving in by evening. Overnight, the rain will become moderate to heavy, and you may even hear a few pops of thunder, though no severe weather is expected. Please give your thoughts and prayers to those living in the south tomorrow, as they won’t be so lucky. Different atmospheric parameters are going to be coming together to form what is looking like a large outbreak of severe weather, including the possibility of strong/violent tornadoes!

Here is the latest severe weather outlook from the SPC (Storm Prediction Center), located in Norman, OK:
Severe Weather Outlook
While the issuance of slight risk areas in the Spring and Summer months is pretty common, moderate risks are not. That alone says that tomorrow has the potential to be very dangerous and unfortunately disastrous in some areas…
