Brief warming…then the cold returns…

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 21-01-2009

Brrr! The chill was still on for Wednesday! However, you “warm weather fans” will like the forecast for the next couple days! As an area of high pressure continues to slide to our east/southeast on Thursday, a nice southwesterly flow will set up, resulting in a surge of much warmer temps! The clear skies will give-way to clouds and rain showers for your Friday. However, the rain will not be all that heavy. By Friday night, temps will begin falling rapidly behind the cold front! The upcoming weekend looks cold with highs in the middle 20s, along with flurry chances…

For next week, I am watching a very interesting setup which may lead to multiple winter storm systems, one (or all) of which may result in accumulating snowfall/ice! Folks, if this pans out as some of the models are showing, we may be having some problems by early next week…

Quiet for now…winter storm(s) brewing?

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 20-01-2009

Well, we have struck a bit of a lull in the pattern across the Ohio Valley, with no storm systems of significance to worry about through the rest of the work week. That…my friends…is going to change. I have had my eyes stuck to the computer screen over the past few days, analyzing the prospects for a major winter storm(s) to affect the Ohio Valley for late this week through parts of next week. The models have been showing different solutions, which is very common this far in advance of the event. However, one thing has been consistent…major wintry weather affecting the Ohio Valley in some shape or form! I am probably the only forecaster in town talking about this potential storm(s), but I truly feel that it is worth mentioning to you! For fun…let’s take the latest main model run from today at face value: light snow for the end of this upcoming weekend, followed by several shots of moderate to heavy snow/ice for much of the Ohio Valley through the rest of next week! Now, as a forecaster, I know not to take a model’s output verbatim this early in the game. However, with the way the pattern is setting up, I am growing more and more confident that someone in the Ohio Valley will receive a large amount of snow/ice! PLEASE check back throughout the rest of the week to keep yourself updated on what could be a major Ohio Valley mess…

Dry Cold Here…Heavy Snow in SE USA…

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 19-01-2009

Well, being the big “snow-lover” that I am, it is hard to even look at the national weather alerts map only to see Winter Storm Warnings across the Southeastern US…where 3-5″ (isolated 6″) of snow is progged to fall tonight!

Here in the ‘Nati, expect the threat for a few flurries once again for Tuesday, with little to no accumulation…

Snow Showers and Colder

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 18-01-2009

Good MLK Day to you ‘all!

After an unsettled weekend, the snow chances continue! Throughout the past few days, several disturbances in the atmosphere have been tracking to the north of Cincy. That has allowed the bulk of the snow to stay to our north. For Monday, expect the last of those disturbances to track through, producing scattered snow showers. Temps will also be on the decrease, falling into the 20s for highs and lower teens for lows! Bundle up!

Cold and Snow Chances

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 17-01-2009

After a chilly but dry Saturday, Sunday looks to bring colder temps and chances for snow showers/flurries! Through the day, a clipper system will be sliding to our north, brining with it snow. Based on the track being NORTH of us, I do not expect any major snow-related problems here. However, with the cold temps tomorrow (and as of late), the ground will be chilled enough to allow for any snow that falls to stick. Bundle up!

A taste of the Arctic, anyone?

Well, you probably know what I am talking about if you have stepped outside today. BRRRR! The major cold blast that I have been hounding on and on about for the last couple weeks has arrived right on cue! A strong Alberta Clipper passed just to our north yesterday, bringing with it the “killing punch” of cold air! The first clipper from earlier in the week brought in colder temps, don’t get me wrong. However, this second clipper really let loose the doors to the bitter cold airmass across Canada! For today, expect highs ranging from the middle single digits to lower teens! If you are a warm weather lover, please do not continue reading. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! Lows for tonight look to bottom out BELOW ZERO! That is some serious cold, to the level of which we don’t see every winter! Bundle up and stay warm!!!

Messy Morning Commute!

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 13-01-2009

A messy Tuesday morning commute is in the forecast as an Alberta Clipper tracks right across the area! Snowfall accumulations will range from 1-3″ area-wide, which is certainly enough to cause problems on area roads and highways! In addition to the snow, temperatures will be falling through the day, with blustery winds making it feel like it’s below zero!

Trevor…where is the 1-3″ of snow?

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 13-01-2009

Well…my forecast busted big time for last night and this morning. The clipper tracked too far north of Cincy, allowing WAA (Warm Air Advection) to stream across the tri-state. The WAA resulted in temperatures climbing into the middle 30s overnight, allowing most of the moisture to fall in the form of rain showers. As I type this message (10:00am), an area of light to moderate snow is developing over Indiana, taking aim on the tri-state for the afternoon hours. Light accumulations (inch or less) are likely area-wide. With falling temps, slick spots (from new snow or morning rain freezing up) are possible across the area, especially on side streets and untreated surfaces! Take it easy!

Another clipper is on the way for midday tomorrow, which has a much better chance of bringing accumulating snow….more on that later with the evening update!

Winter Weather Advisory!

Posted by Trevor Cole in Daily Weather Updates on 12-01-2009

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Cincinnati area, beginning 4AM (Tue Morning) and continuing through 1PM (Tue Afternoon). An Alberta Clipper is sliding out of the midwest, progged to track to our north, bringing with it colder temperatures and light snow accumulations! It appears that the heaviest snowfall amounts will be found north of I-70. However, associated with the low pressure is a fairly strong upper level disturbance, which will help to kick off areas of light to moderate snow for Cincy on Tuesday morning. While the amounts will be light (1-3″), the timing couldn’t be worse! The heaviest snow looks to fall during the Tuesday morning rush! With temperatures falling into the upper 20s, the snow will not have much of a problem creating slick spots on the roads tomorrow, especially on side streets/untreated surfaces. Please take it easy out on the roads, as the weather will be less than ideal for many commuters. As the day progresses, the snow will decrease in intensity and coverage. However, winds will begin picking up (gusts up to 30mph) and temps will be falling into the lower 20s by Tuesday afternoon! Bundle up and take it easy on the roads!
